INTAKE PORTS
AFD's uses a raised port, small runner 4v style alloy cylinder head that delivers the high rpm horsepower of a 4v design with the added bonus of awesome torque and throttle response, utilizing the same super efficient chamber design used in our 2v heads.
All 4v Intakes will bolt up to these heads. Some intakes will need the intake port floor filled with epoxy and port matched to the smaller chambers.
EXHAUST RUNNERS
The Exhaust design has been heavily modified to increase flow throughout the lift range.
The exhaust runner has been designed to maximize the lower lift flow which is more important than high lift flow. Testing various flow levels has proven that high lift flow has little, to no benefit. However, low lift exhaust flow alters the torque curve dramatically. The more exhaust flows between .100" and .400" the more the torque curve responds.
The exhaust runner location and bolt pattern has been raised just 2mm (.080") which allows the use of existing exhaust systems. The exhaust port exit has been widened to accommodate today's larger cubic inch engines. 4V headers shouldn't need any matching at all.
The valve bowl has been revised to increase low lift flow producing a much more efficient intake/exhaust relationship. This assists with cylinder emptying reducing pumping losses allowing the engine to produce a broader torque curve.
THE COMBUSTION
The new 64cc chamber is designed to minimize detonation by increasing quench area and swirl allowing for a more efficient and complete burn with less ignition timing than the original 57cc chamber that was designed for those that required higher compression. These heads can support larger chambers for blown or turbo engines.
The new chambers are also designed to maximize the efficiency of the exhaust stroke, aiding the reduction of pumping losses (Broad Torque Curve).
COMING SOON HIGH LIFT INTAKE PORT SP4V
18 years of cylinder head porting and design has allowed AFD to design the small port 4v (SP4V) to bring the awesome power potential of the iron 4v cylinder head down to a more usable rpm level whilst increasing throttle response and low to mid range torque.A high reving 351 (7500 rpm) or lower rpm stroker engine will benefit from AFD's ability to produce not only great horsepower but an awesome broad torque curve right out of the box.Utilising a slightly raised intake port design and engineering the intake face and bolt pattern has allowed the SP4V to use any 4v intake manifold that fits onto an iron 4v cylinder head fitted with port fillers. The high airspeed at low lift produces a cracking throttle response with less camshaft overlap resulting in a smoother cleaner idol without dropping manifold vacuum.AFD has a range of custom camshaft designs to maximise the performance levels of your engine.
The same super efficient chamber and exhaust runner design as our 2V cylinder heads allows for the use of high compression / low octane fuel combinations because of the less lead ignition timing required in engines fitted with AFD cylinder heads.
You can also retain your existing exhaust system too as both the 2v and SP4V exhaust runners have been raised only 2mm(.080").
The AFD SP4V comes standard machined to accept a 7/16" unc screw in stud and guide plate type rocker system, raised rocker cover rails, hardened valve seats.AFD developed valve seat design (Serdi 100) and valve guides honed (Sunnen) for max guide life.Complete packges are available for street use or competition use.AFD uses only the trusted brands of Comp Cams and Manley when choosing valvetrain components to go into our complete packages whether for the street or full roller race engine.

AFD RECOMMENDATION INFORMATION |
Valves: Intake: 12 degree face angle and back cut 30 degrees at least 2mm wide. Exhaust: 20 degree tulip face angle, back cut 32 degrees will produce better results on the engine. Stock length cleveland valves are advised:Intake 5.250",Exhaust 5.050".both with a .250" tip length For solid roller valve spring set up it may be easier to use a +.100" valve length to obtain larger installed heights.
Spark Plugs: Stock Cleveland plugs do not suit these heads. AFD recommend a NGKBCP6ES or Champion C59C or equivalent, which is a 5/8 hex, washer seat, long reach style plug. Heat range will vary depending on engine and climate/tune. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE A TAPERED SEAT PLUG IN ALLOY HEADS.
Valve Guide Clearance: Recommended valve guide clearances Intake .0007” Exhaust .001”
Torque Specs: AFD recommend std torque settings of head bolts/studs as recommended by suppliers. Bolts 95lbs, Studs 105lbs following standard torque sequence in at least 2 stages.
Intake Manifolds: All resonable efforts have been made to ensure an easy and correct fittment of the intake manifold. Intake manifolds may vary in how they sit on your engine, therefore AFD suggest you check port and bolt hole alignment before final fitting as some modifications may be required to the intake even if it was used on your previous heads.
Rockers: The use of a stud mounted roller rocker is what these heads are designed for, however, other ie.Yella Terra platinum pedestal style rockers can also be fitted at your own risk. Rocker studs are 7/16 UNC and should be tightened no more than 50ft-lbs. Over tightening the studs does not make them stronger, it will only damage the threads. AFD recommend the use of a sealant on the rocker studs as some may protrude into intake ports or water jackets.
Pushrods: Pushrod length may vary so checking for correct geometry is required to ensure longer guide life and smooth valvetrain operation. Block decking, head surfacing, camshaft base circle material, valve tip lengths all alter the geometry aspects of the valve train and should be checked for this reason to ensure correct operation.Do not assume intake and exhaust pushrod lengths should be the same,in some cases two different lengths may be required.
Parker Funnelweb Intake FORD 351 Cleveland 4V $530
The Funnelweb's plenum, which uses partitions to extend the runners, is designed to increase velocity through the runners. The tall height of the plenum also gives some tunnel ram-like effect to the intake charge. The runners are designed to provide a nearly straight path to the head ports. The unique design of the plenum and runners results in virtually zero impact on intake port flow.
