Combo 1.

Combos 1-3 came from the World Products web site. Although only cam duration numbers are given, all of the three different duration numbers happen to be the exact durations of the three most popular Comp Cams Xtreme Energy camshafts.

Combo 1 is a basic engine build with the popular Sportsman II heads and a conservative camshaft. Although torque numbers are not given, the short-duration cam probably helps to produce more than 350 ft-lbs of torque.

Camshaft: 262° hydraulic, (probably the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262°, with 262/270° of duration, 218/224° of duration @ 0.050 in. of lift, and 0.462/0.469 in. of lift.)

Combo 2.

Combo 2 has a little more compression, which could account for a little bit of power gain, but the cam with longer duration is what really raises the power. I am sure that the torque does not increase too much, and it may actually decrease. The carb upgrade might have added power, but the 600 cfm carb could have easily produced this much power.

Combo 3.

Combo 3 has even more compression than the previous combos, which probably adds some power. The combustion chambers are cleaned up some, and an even more aggressive cam is used on this engine. If the camshaft is the Xtreme Energy grind, the torque is beginning to have some trouble with this amount of duration.

Combo 4.

Combos 4-7 comes from page 39 of the February 1989 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. All four combos use the 383 cu. in. engine with rebuilt GM heads and Holley 750 double pumper. These combos show the difference between some intakes and heads.

Combo 4 uses an Edelbrock Performer intake and a 280° cam. The power and torque numbers are pretty good.

Combo 5.

Combo 5 keeps the Performer intake from Combo 4, but a 292° cam is used. This camshaft duration increase drives the power up 17 HP, and the torque stays about the same. It is suprising that a cam with this much duration does not drop the torque level.

Combo 6.

Combo 6 goes back to the 280° camshaft, but an Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake is used instead. This combination produces 17 more HP and a little more torque. Even though the Victor Jr. intake has been billed a high-RPM-only intake, this comparison shows that the intake produced more low-end torque than the Performer. Victor Jr.'s are becoming popular intakes as more car guys realize just how streetable they are.

Combo 8.

Combos 8-10 come from the Trick Flow Specialties web site. All three combinations use the same 383 cu. in. engine with a moderate roller camshaft and 10:1 compression. The next three combos vary cylinder heads.

Combo 8 uses the Trick Flow 23° Street heads. These heads are not the Twisted Wedge heads for which Trick Flow became known. Instead, these are direct bolt-on heads, and are marketed to compete with $750/pair to $1,000/pair heads such as the World Products Sportsman II, Dart Iron Eagle, Edelbrock Performer RPM, Holley Systemax, etc. With some help from the roller cam, this engine makes 460 HP and 451 ft-lbs of torque.

Combo 9 exchanges the Trick Flow heads from Combo 8 for the World Products Sportsman II's. This results in a horsepower loss of 38 HP and 25 ft-lbs of torque. However, the power level is still very respectable.

Combo 10.

Combo 10 uses Dart Iron Eagles instead of Sportsman II's. The swap produces 24 more HP and 7 more ft-lbs of torque than the Sportsman II's. The Iron Eagles also made 14 less HP and 18 less ft-lbs of torque than the Trick Flow 23° heads. We can see that the Dart heads are clearly better than the World Products heads.

Combo 11.

Combos 11-17 come from the Air Flow Research (AFR) web site. Not all of the engine combinations are done on the same test block, but all have similar characteristics. AFR heads cost about $1,200/pair assembled, and a lot of the head work is done by CNC machines.

Combo 11 uses a 383 cu. in. engine with a small 600 cfm carb, AFR 195 cc Street heads, and a moderate to high-performance hydraulic camshaft. The combination produces 440 HP at 5000 RPM and an excellent 470 ft-lbs of torque at a very streetable 3500 RPM. This is one of my favorite combos.

Combo 13.

Combo 13 is close to Combo 12, but it uses the 190cc Street heads instead of the 195cc version. These heads are supposed to be better suited to the smaller 350 cu. in. small block. Notice that the 270° Magnum is very close to the cam in Combo 12. Perhaps the reason for the power and torque increase is the larger 750 cfm double pumper and extra half-point of compression.

Combo 15 uses a 383 cu. in. engine with 9.5:1 compression and a 750 double pumper. With a 280° hydraulic camshaft and the AFR 190cc Street heads, this combination makes an awesome 471 HP and an incredible 515 ft-lbs of torque. This is the ultimate street engine.

Combo 17.

Combo 17 is the last combination from the AFR web site. This combo uses the same parts as Combo 16, except a more aggressive roller cam is used. This engine is over the 500 HP/ 500 ft-lbs mark—it could easily achieve low 10's in the quarter mile in a Nova, Camaro, Corvette, etc. This engine is one of the most powerful engines on my site and is perfectly streetable. Just imagine what a healthy dose of nitrous could do.

Combo 18.

Combo's 18 and 19 come from pages 50-51 of Engines 2000.

Combo 18 uses rebuilt GM heads with big valves, a long-duration camshaft, and a 750 double pumper carb. GM heads have always been mass-produced; this has caused GM to produce heads that meet both performance and economical needs. Therefore, it is usually more difficult to make GM heads flow as well as the performance-only aftermarket heads.

This engine combination is pretty close to Combo 19. A larger carb and more aggressive cam is used. The exact compression ratio is not mentioned, but it is probably closer to 9:1. This engine makes power and torque almost identical to Combo 19.

This engine combo has 383 cu. in. of displacement, a 750 cfm carb, Brodix -8 heads, a Performer intake, and a short-duration roller cam. The Brodix -8 heads are made to compete with the Sportsman II's, Iron Eagle's, and other similarly-priced heads. This build-up produces a good amount of power and lots of torque.

Combo 22.

Combos 22-23 come from page 64 of the March 1997 issue of Car Craft Magazine. The first combo is the stock engine, and the next is the engine rebuilt with aftermarket parts.

Combo 22 is a stock engine. Notice the smaller valves, the long duration but short lift of the cam, and the Quadrajet carb. This combination produces a low 248 HP but a street-oriented 330 ft-lbs of torque.

Combo 23.

Combo 23 uses Holley Systemax II components. The cam seems a little big for street use, but Holley designed the parts of this kit to work together. It increases power by 152 HP and 76 ft-lbs of torque. If you compare this engine to engines with other aftermarket heads, this combo does not make as much power. Holley heads do not seem to be quite as good as comparable heads, although they still cost as much.
