50 State Smog Legal Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Heads: (CARB EO #D-369-1)
These heads made 438 BHP & 443TQ as tested by MM&FF
The fully assembled heads feature 61cc chambers with rotated 2.02 in valves 170cc intake ports - 1.60 ex valves 66cc exhaust ports. The valves moved over the center of the cylinder bores, to build top-end power without sacrificing bottom-end torque. Twisted Wedge heads don't require flycut pistons with most street performance cams up to 224 duration and or 540 lift. The XE 274 camshafts will require the special twisted wedge pistons and can only be used in 347s. Twisted Wedge heads have stock height intake and exhaust ports for use with most OEM and aftermarket intake and exhaust manifolds. $1200
Bracket Racing Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Heads:Trick Flow's Track Heat heads are ideal for the entry-level Ford bracket racer. Same as above but with .560 in. thick combustion chamber walls for added strength, and additional support risers in the water jackets. The fully assembled heads feature higher rate valve springs (135 lbs. seat pressure at 1.800 in. installed height), 10 degree locks, and manganese bronze guides. $1320

347 Short Rod Option
There is some concern about 331 verses 347.
A 347 has a shorter stroke length/rod length ratio 1.588:1 verse 1.66:1 for a 331.
Short rods create more rod angle and places greater load on the rings, piston skirts and cylinder walls.
As a result the rings tend to wear out a little sooner. Additionally shorter rods pull the piston further out of the bottom of the cylinder.
Comparing the 347 1.588:1 to the very popular Chevy 383 with 5.70" rods which has a ratio of 1.52:1, the concerns about the 347 would seem invalid.
The 347 with a 5.40" length rod places the wrist pin in the oil ring groove, however the use of a steel spacer under the oil ring has proven effective in supporting the oil ring so it can do it's job.
I use the 5.315 Rod in most 347 engines as being a good compromise between piston and rod lengths.
The 331 verse 347 is a hotly debated issue. Most of the engine builders I work with believe the 347 is a more powerful engine and worth the slightly increased wear factor.
Theory and fact don't always agree. All else being equal, in a drag race a 347 will take a 331. I leave the final decision to you. As an engine builder it is safer for me to recommend a 331, but as a hot rodder I'd choose the 347 for myself. If the 347 does wear more quickly, the rate will be a small percentage.
There is a 16 cid difference, so @ 1.3:1 BHP per CID that's means a 20bhp difference, maybe,
but much more likely the 347 will make 5bhp and 13ft-lbs more, that's all!
However the 347 can better utilize bigger intake ports and longer duration camshafts
to seek out the 20bhp.
In a test my associate conducted we made 420BHp & 400TQ with a 331
and the same combo in a 347 made 440BHP & 420TQ.
In a race more the 331 made 570BHP & 470TQ, the 347 made 595BHP & 530TQ,
keep in mind a race motor is not expected to go 50,000 miles.
|
As with every engine I build there are options. I will do my best to build an engine within your budget.
I have discount the price on this engine. Plus this motor can still make more power!
