Having grown up in Christchurch and Timaru completing a full automotive machinist apprenticeship in the 1970s where I did a little racing before arriving in California in 1981 I know what it's like to deal with the $1.38 exchange rate, the freight cost and that awful 21% import duty. Then they want another 12.5% GST and a $25 IETF .
On top of that figure anyone you buy an imported engine from in NZ will be wanting to make a fair profit.
It all adds up quickly.  

That means a 5000USD engine can cost you 8810NZD to pick it up from the shipping company or maybe as much as $10,000 from a retail outlet.
